It’s been common practice for years for sports stadia to have huge screens, Jumbotrons, showing close-ups of the game, but in an age when almost every spectator arrives with their own high resolution, internet-connected screen, these big screens no longer make much sense.
According to global networking technology company, Cisco, 2012 was a watershed in the way we watch video: it was the first time that online viewing of video surpassed traditional viewing, and the company projects an uncertain future for many industry players with the rapid evolution of online video to multiscreen online video.
SMPTE, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, is almost 100 years old and is grappling with the greatest and most profound changes in its long history. The forces behind these changes will be much to fore at its biannual exhibition and conference that kicks of in Sydney on 23 July.
